Kindle Jailbreaking & Modding Guide

I run KindleModShelf.me where I have tried to consolidate all available Kindle mods into one place. Before this, mods were scattered across different forums, often with just a single post each. The good news is they are now easier to find. The bad news is that landing on a website with hundreds of mods can be overwhelming.

This guide is an onboarding ramp. It walks you through the jailbreaking process and points you to what I consider the essentials. Once you have these basics installed, you can explore the rest of the site and decide what else you want.

Why Jailbreak Your Kindle?

Jailbreaking your Kindle gives you the freedom to do more with your device and your books.

  • Freedom over your books: Keep your e-books and documents truly yours—Amazon cannot change, remove, or restrict your files after jailbreaking.
  • Restore Cloud Features: Amazon has started to remove all cloud features from older Kindles; jailbreaking re-implements those features and more through Google Drive or self-hosted options.
  • Install powerful alternative reading apps like KOReader for EPUB, PDF, CBZ, and more formats plus advanced customization.
  • Personalize your Kindle with custom screensavers or sleep images.
  • Add apps: drawing, notes, audio playback, file manager, terminal, and classic games.
  • Run Python or shell scripts—automate tasks or create your own Kindle tools.
  • Block forced Amazon firmware updates and keep control of your device.
  • Access more customization, accessibility, and privacy options.

3 Post-Jailbreak Essentials

Make sure you have installed Block OTA Updates, MRPI, and KUAL from the Post-Jailbreak Guide.

This should be integrated with the jailbreaking process, but it is important to make sure!

Congratulations! You have now freed yourself from the grasp of Amazon!

Essential Mods

1. Install KindleForge (App Store)

KindleForge is an app store for Kindles that allows you to download and install mods directly on your device, without needing to copy files manually. Then open KindleForge and install whatever you want.
